This course is limited to current members of a Fire Dept who require their volunteer certification.
Full Description
This 36-hour awareness level course meets the Ohio Administrative Code (OAC)  requirements for volunteer firefighters. Students will obtain entry level knowledge of the fire service in the areas of ladders, ropes, ventilation, forcible entry, personal protective equipment, hoses and water movement. This program is a comprehensive, fast-paced course that requires time for studying outside of the classroom.

Students must pass written and practical skill competency evaluations to successfully complete the course..  The course is held over two weekends; each beginning at 18:00 on Friday, and concluding at 18:00 on Sunday.  Attending students must have perfect attendance to be eligible for certification. There are no course fees, and tuition, meals, course materials and dormitories are provided free of charge, however, students must supply their own personal protective equipment (PPE) and SCBA.


All students must provide documentation indicating they meet all prerequisites listed below.

I understand that it is my responsibility to follow these policies and curriculum requirements as outlined in my course materials, and I agree to conduct myself in a manner that exhibits professionalism and responsibility at all times. I acknowledge that my failure to abide by the policies and procedures set forth by the Ohio Fire Academy may lead to disciplinary action up to and including immediate removal from the program if deemed appropriate. Further I understand that dismissal from an Ohio Fire Academy program forfeits my rights to a refund of the said program.

Resources Required
Students who wish to be considered for the Volunteer Firefighter program at the Ohio Fire Academy must submit registration online & upload copies of the following paperwork at least FIVE (5) WEEKS prior to the start date.

1. Students must meet applicable requirements outlined by OAC 4765-20-02.
2. Students must undergo a medical evaluation by a physician that meets the requirements of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1582 Standard on Medical Requirements for Firefighters, 2018 Edition. A completed Ohio Fire Academy Medical Evaluation form, signed by a physician, must be submitted.
3. Students must have the National Incident Management System NIMS IS-100.c and NIMS IS-700.b online courses completed, and submit copies of these certifications.
4. Students must be a member of a fire department, and submit a letter from their Fire Chief that testifies that they are covered by insurance.
5. Students must submit a copy of a high school diploma or GED.
Reporting Instructions
Class dates are: November 13-15 and November 20-22, 2020. The class will meet in the cafeteria at the Ohio Fire Academy, located at 8895 E. Main Street Reynoldsburg.   Class begins at 18:00 on Friday and 08:00 on Saturday and Sunday.  If you are staying in a dorm, you may arrive earlier in the afternoon on Friday.

PPE needs to be complete with: Helmet and approved eye protection, turnout coat and pants with suspenders, gloves, hood, and boots.   SCBA's must be fully functional with two spare bottles.  *Note – All PPE must be secured in your vehicle until instructed otherwise. (i.e. do not bring PPE/SCBA into the main building and/or dormitories).

Please dress appropriate for the class (Fire Department uniform or Collared Shirt) no shorts or hats in class.
