Fire Officer III & IV
Full Description
This is the only Fire Officer III & IV program in Ohio which allows students to receive International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) and National Fire Academy (NFA) certification. The course meets and exceeds NFPA 1020, Standards of Professional Qualifications for Fire Officer III and Fire Officer IV. This course is intended for students whose primary responsibilities is as a shift commander or above in their department.

Topics covered include the principles of management theory and its application to the fire service including topics on communications, professional development, community and intergovernmental relations, human resources, legal issues, strategic planning, public education, budget and financial issues and emergency management.

This course will meet on campus a total of four times with time in between sessions being used to complete assignments. This is an intensive program that requires out of class work and students should plan on spending at least 20 hours on these assignments. It is not a sit-and-learn program. This course is designed to meet the standards of NFPA 1020, Professional Qualifications for Fire Officer III & IV and this standard clearly lays out the progressive sequence of becoming a fire officer. Because this is a standards-based course, material will be presented to you from a variety of sources.

Evaluations of student performance will be conducted throughout the course, as well as with a final exam. Students will be required to report to campus once at the end of the course to take their final exam.

Because this course is taught to the NFPA 1020, Standard of Professional Qualifications for Fire Officer, Instructor I, Fire Officer I and Fire Officer II certifications are required. These competencies must be validated with either an IFSAC or ProBoard certifications issued to you.

If you do not have these but have completed the required prerequisite classes you can obtain  IFSAC Certifications for these classes by scheduling knowledge and skills examinations for these prerequisites with the Registrar’s Office at 614- 752-7196. These certifications must be completed prior to the start of the class.

If you are unsure if you have IFSAC or ProBoard Accreditation for the prerequisites contact the Academy for assistance.
