Brief Description: Hybrid version of OFA Fire Officer I course

Full Description: This is an intensive program that requires significant pre-course and in-class work on behalf of the student. It is not a sit-and-learn program.

This course meets the requirements of NFPA 1020, Standards of Professional Qualifications for Fire Officer I and is the only Fire Officer I course in Ohio in which students are able to obtain International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) certification. Students will also receive certificates from both the Ohio and National Fire Academies upon completion of the course. This is a standards-based course, material will be presented from a variety of sources.

Students must have IFSAC or ProBoard certification for the class prerequisites. Those who do not have this but have completed the required prerequisite class can obtain an IFSAC Certification for those classes by scheduling knowledge and skills examinations for those prerequisites in which they are not certified with the Registrar’s Office at 614- 752-7196. These certifications must be completed prior to the start of the class. If you are unsure if you have IFSAC or ProBoard Accreditation for the prerequisites contact the Academy for assistance with making the determination.

Students will learn essential techniques and skills in leadership, supervision, decision making practices, legal responsibilities, communication, report writing, workplace safety, quality assurance, delegation, pre-incident planning and prioritization in both routine and emergency situations. This course is helpful in guiding the firefighter in the transition from peer to officer.

Evaluations of student performance will be conducted throughout the course, including skills testing and a comprehensive course final exam covering all Fire Officer I objectives. Students will have the opportunity to put skills to use in practice simulations and role play scenarios. There will be two three day on campus sessions during the class.

Prerequisites: The NFPA Standard for Fire Officer Professional Qualifications at Fire Officer Level I requires the candidate to meet the requirements of Fire Fighter II as defined in the current and previous versions of the NFPA Professional Qualifications Standards for Firefighter II. Submit documentation demonstrating ProBoard or IFSAC certification of this certification.

Computer and processor: Minimum 1.6 GHz (or higher) (32-bit or 64-bit). Memory 2.0 GB RAM, Hard disk 3.0 GB of available disk space, Graphics hardware Minimum of 128 MB graphics memory.
Devices: Standard laptop camera, microphone, and headphones/ear buds.
For a better experience with online meetings, we recommend using a computer that has a dual-core processor and 8.0 GB RAM (or higher).
The optional Background video effects are not supported on processors without an AVX2 instruction set running on Windows 8.1 or below.

HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS FOR TEAMS ON MOBILE DEVICES

Android: Compatible with Android phones and tablets. Support is limited to the last four major versions of Android. When a new major version of Android is released, the new version and the previous three versions are officially supported.

iOS: Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Support is limited to the two most recent major versions of iOS. When a new major version of iOS is released, the new version of iOS and the previous version are officially supported. The optional Blur my background video effect on iOS requires an operating system of iOS 12 or later and is compatible with the following devices: iPhone 7 or later, iPad 2018 (6th generation) or later, and the iPod touch 2019 (7th generation).

For the best experience with Teams, use the latest version of iOS and Android.

Students must purchase Fire Officer Principles and Practice, Enhanced Fifth Edition, with Navigate 2 Advantage Access textbook, Published by Jones and Bartlett (ISBN: 9781284311044). Contact the course coordinator at the Academy if you are having any difficulty accessing the course in Navigate.

Reporting Instructions: Login at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start time in the event you may have any technical issues.

This class meets on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. You will receive a schedule for the classroom presentations and specific class information when you are enrolled in the class.

Class will meet on campus February 22 - 24 and April 5 - 7.

Signup Details: Because this course is taught to NFPA 1021, Standard of Professional Qualifications for Fire Officer, a Instructor I certification is required. This competency must be validated with either an IFSAC or ProBoard certifications issued to you.

You can obtain an IFSAC Certification for this class by scheduling knowledge and skills examinations with the Registrar’s Office at 614- 644-5676. Certifications must be completed prior to the start of the class.

If you do not have this but have completed the required prerequisite class you can obtain an IFSAC Certification for the class by scheduling knowledge and skills examinations for this prerequisite with the Registrar’s Office at 614- 752-7196. These certifications must be completed prior to the start of the class.

If you have not completed the Instructor I prerequisite you may enroll in and complete the Academy's Fire and Emergency Services Instructor I, NFPA 1020, 2025 edition online course prior to the start of this Fire Officer I course.

This is an intensive competency-based program that includes pre-on campus and evening assignments. Evaluations of student performance will be conducted throughout the course, including skills testing and a comprehensive course final covering all Fire Officer I objectives as well as Fire Instructor I objectives for those individuals that do not possess ProBoard or IFSAC Fire Instructor I certification.
