Full Description: *Train the Trainer* Guidelines for Utility-Scale Energy Storage Emergencies. All instructors attending the Train the Trainer must attend the regular course as a student on October 16th. This 2 day class will provide the instructor foundational knowledge of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and the unique hazards associated with emergency incidents involving utility-scale battery technology.
Instructors will learn how BESS facilities are designed, how the systems operate, and how to recognize key fireground hazards including thermal runaway, toxic and flammable gas release, energized electrical systems, arc flash hazards, and other potential incident conditions.
The course emphasizes firefighter safety, situational awareness, risk-informed decision-making, defensive response strategies, isolation zones, exposure protection, and coordination with facility representatives. The course also reinforces the importance of Emergency Response Plans (ERPs), pre-incident planning, and collaboration between fire departments, AHJs, and facility operators.
This course is not intended to provide facility-specific training, technical site operations training, or make students BESS subject matter experts. It is intended to improve responder awareness and support safe, informed decision-making during BESS-related incidents.
