Full Description
This hybrid style course covers material in NFPA 1006 2021 edition, Standard for Technical Rescue Personnel Professional Qualifications, Chapter 12; Job Performance Requirements (JPRs) for Trench Rescue Awareness, Operations, and Technician.

Students will begin with the concrete Trench Training Prop and finish with multiple live trench scenarios. Students will learn various shoring techniques, assorted trench layouts, hazard control scenarios, scene management, rescue vs. recovery operations, and termination procedures of a trench incident.

Students will be required to attend five (5) online virtual instructor-led classes followed by five (5) days on campus at the Ohio Fire Academy (includes the weekend). Any student who fails to have 100% attendance will fail the class, and not receive a certification. Students will also be required to read, in its entirety "Trench Rescue; Principles and Practice, 5th edition" ISBN-978-1-284- 20234-2, by Jones and Bartlett. All students will be required to use the Jones and Bartlett Navigate platform to complete quizzes, and other assignments that will be due prior to arriving on campus.  The student must commit to the class, and all of its requirements in order to be successful.  Failure to do so will result in failure of the class.

Additional information will be available upon course confirmation. Students must complete written and hands-on skill competency evaluations to successfully complete the course. Evaluations of student performance will be conducted throughout the course, and will conclude with a final exam. Students who successfully complete all course requirements are eligible for International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) certification.

I attest that I am affiliated with or endorsed by an Ohio volunteer fire department, a fire department of a political subdivision or fire district of this state, or a private volunteer company, as a firefighter;

I am  NOT eligible or will NOT be eligible to be a member of the Ohio Police and Fire Pension Fund.

Internet Connection / Access to: Microsoft Teams and Jones and Bartlett Navigate Platform

The Text book that will be required is Trench Rescue; Principles and Practice 4th edition,           ISBN 978-284-20234-2.  A new book with a Navigate access code is required. . All chapters and sections are required to be read prior to the start of this course.

Safety glasses, safety helmet (rescue style preferred), work style boots and rescue or work style gloves are necessary. Clothing should be appropriate for outdoor evolutions regardless of weather conditions.

Students will be required to successfully complete practical and written assessments as part of course completion. The written exam will be generated by a computer.  Failure to pass any portion of the written exam will result in failure of the course.  

Students will have only 1 opportunity to pass the written, and hands on evaluations while on campus.  An additional 2 attempts will be available at a later date to be scheduled by the student and OFA administration. If any students cannot complete the skills evaluation, or the written exam, the student will fail the course, and will not receive a certification.

Reporting Instructions
The first day of class will start at 0900. Students should report to the main building security office to sign in. At that time, classroom assignments will be available. This class opens up for the online portion on July 14. There will be 4 2hr. online lectures prior to the on-campus portion. The on-campus hands on portion will be on Aug 25th-29th. Your instructor will reach out before your reporting date with additional information.
