Hazardous Materials: Technician certification course
Full Description
This course is approved by the Federal Office of Domestic Preparedness. Upon completion, participants will be prepared to enter hazardous materials hot zones to control spills and leaks using offensive measures designed to protect property and the environment. Students will have the opportunity to practice material learned in the classroom through hands-on exercises. The course also prepares students to recognize, respond and terminate a weapon of mass destruction event.
This course conforms to all competencies for OSHA 29 CFT 1910.120 HAZWOPER as well as NFPA 472 & 1072 competencies for Hazardous Materials Technicians. Students will learn the use of ICS, CBRNE, prevention and deterrence, clothing protection, basic chemistry, air monitoring instruments, control containment and confinement techniques, and terrorism threat assessment.

Resources Required
Students are required to purchase IFSTA, Hazardous Materials Technician, 2nd Edition ISBN: 9780879396268 and complete all pre-course assignments prior to the start of class. Additional information will be forwarded by the course coordinator upon enrollment in the course. Be advised, it may take up to 7-10 days to receive your textbook, depending on the vendor.

Participants will be expected to wear SCBA for extended periods during the training process and are requested to bring a set of structural turnouts and an SCBA with a spare cylinder with them if available.

Students must successfully complete written and skill competency evaluations at the current course level and requisite levels of the discipline to successfully complete the course.
