Full Description
This is the only Fire Officer III & IV program in Ohio which allows students to receive International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) certification. The course meets and exceeds NFPA 1021, Standards of Professional Qualifications for Fire Officer III and Fire Officer IV. This course is intended for students whose primary responsibilities is as a shift commander or above in their department.

Topics covered include the principles of management theory and its application to the fire service including topics on communications, professional development, community and intergovernmental relations, human resources, legal issues, strategic planning, public education, budget and financial issues and emergency management.

This course is part of the ‘Flipped Classroom’ model, which requires reading and studying material when not on campus for class. Evaluations of student performance will be conducted throughout the course, as well as with a final exam. To receive IFSAC certification for this class students must have certification for their prerequisites or complete the required knowledge and skills examinations for those prerequisites in which they are not certified.

Students admitted to the program who have not completed an accredited (IFSAC or ProBoard) Fire Officer I & II programs will be required to demonstrate competency by passing the Fire Officer I & II exams in addition to the Fire Officer III/IV exam.

If you are a State of Ohio Fire, EMS, or Fire Safety Inspector Instructor certification only (not IFSAC or Pro Board) you are required to you take and pass the Instructor I course completion exam in addition to the Fire Officer III/IV course completion exam.

Documentation demonstrating ProBoard or IFSAC certification in Fire Officer II; or successful completion of NFPA 1021, 2013 edition, Chapter 5: Competencies for Fire Officer II.
Documentation demonstrating ProBoard or IFSAC certification in Fire Fighter II; or successful completion of NFPA 1001, 2013 edition, Chapter 6: Competencies for Fire Fighter II, or NFPA 1001, 2019 edition, Chapter 5: Competencies for Fire Fighter II.
NIMS IS-700 Certificate
Documentation demonstrating ProBoard or IFSAC certification in Fire Officer I; or successful completion of NFPA 1021, 2013 edition, Chapter 4: Competencies for Fire Officer I.

Volunteer Support Grant Program

I am a Volunteer Firefighter for purposes of Volunteer Support Grant Program if both of the following apply to you:

1. You are affiliated with or are endorsed by an Ohio volunteer fire department, a fire department of a political subdivision or fire district of this state, or a private volunteer company, as a firefighter;
and
2. You are NOT eligible or will NOT be eligible to be a member of the Ohio Police and Fire Pension Fund.

If you commenced work as a firefighter prior to November 8, 1990, please email the OFA at ofaweb@com.state.oh.us so that the OFA can assist in determining status.

Students must bring laptops or tablets with WiFi access to class. This is an intensive competency-based program that includes pre-course and evening assignments. Evaluations of student performance will be conducted throughout the course, including skills testing and a comprehensive course final covering all Fire Officer III & IV objectives. Students are required to purchase Chief Officer Principles and Practice, Third Edition, with Navigate 2 Advantage Access, published by Jones and Bartlett (ISBN: 9781284172478). Students should have the textbook in hand as soon as practical in order to access the pre-course assignments online. Contact the course coordinator at the Academy if you are having any difficulty accessing the course in Navigate.
