Brief Description: Virtual online Fire Officer I - NFPA 1021

Full Description: The Ohio Fire Academy offers the only nationally (NFA) and internationally (IFSAC) accredited Fire Officer I program in the State of Ohio. Students will learn essential techniques and skills in leadership including time management, delegation and prioritization in both routine and emergency situations. Students will have the opportunity to put skills to use in practice simulations and role play scenarios. This course is helpful in guiding the firefighter in the transition from peer to officer.

This course meets NFPA 1021, Standards of Professional Qualifications for Fire Officer I. Content includes, but is not limited to, leadership, supervisory and decision making practices, legal responsibilities, communication practices, report writing, workplace safety, quality assurance and pre-incident planning.

Course prerequisites: Firefighter II & Fire Instructor I (See prerequisite requirements). Evaluations of student performance will be conducted throughout the course, including skills testing and a comprehensive course final covering all Fire Officer I objectives.

Per NFPA 1021 Chapter 4 Fire Officer I, Section 4.1* General: For qualification at Fire Officer Level I, the candidate shall meet the requirements of Fire Fighter II as defined in NFPA 1001, Fire Instructor I as defined in NFPA 1041 and the job performance requirements defined in Sections 4.2 through 4.7 of this standard, and Fire Instructor I as defined in NFPA 1041 2012 or 2019 edition. A.4.1 It is recognized that the job of Fire Officer may not be as physically demanding as that of a Fire Fighter. However, the physiological and emotional stress incurred by Fire Officers can still be significant. Therefore, it is recommended that physical fitness requirements for Fire Officer personnel be developed and validated by the AHJ. A.4.1.1 Other prerequisite knowledge can include an understanding of negligence, duty to act, standard of care, tort immunity, types of laws (statutes, regulations, etc.), role of OSHA, impact of NFPA standards on OSHA and standard of care, and sexual harassment.

Prerequisites: I am a volunteer firefighter and wish to receive free training at the Ohio Fire Academy.

I attest that I am affiliated with or endorsed by an Ohio volunteer fire department, a fire department of a political subdivision or fire district of this state, or a private volunteer company, as a firefighter;

and

I am NOT eligible or will NOT be eligible to be a member of the Ohio Police and Fire Pension Fund.

Documentation demonstrating ProBoard or IFSAC certification in Fire Fighter II; or successful completion of NFPA 1001, 2013 edition, Chapter 6: Competencies for Fire Fighter II, or NFPA 1001, 2019 edition, Chapter 5: Competencies for Fire Fighter II.
Documentation demonstrating ProBoard or IFSAC certification in Fire Instructor I; or successful completion of NFPA 1041, 2012 edition, Chapter 4: Competencies for Instructor I.

Resources Required: HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS FOR TEAMS ON A WINDOWS PC
Computer and processor: Minimum 1.6 GHz (or higher) (32-bit or 64-bit). Memory 2.0 GB RAM, Hard disk 3.0 GB of available disk space, Graphics hardware Minimum of 128 MB graphics memory.
Devices: Standard laptop camera, microphone, and headphones/ear buds.
For a better experience with online meetings, we recommend using a computer that has a dual-core processor and 8.0 GB RAM (or higher).
The optional Background video effects are not supported on processors without an AVX2 instruction set running on Windows 8.1 or below.

When a new major version of iOS is released, the new version of iOS and the previous version are officially supported. The optional Blur my background video effect on iOS requires an operating system of iOS 12 or later and is compatible with the following devices: iPhone 7 or later, iPad 2018 (6th generation) or later, and the iPod touch 2019 (7th generation).

Reporting Instructions: This class meets on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:00 - 8:00 PM. Login at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start time in the event you may have any technical issues.

You will receive a schedule for the classroom presentations and specific class information when you are enrolled in the class.

Signup Details: Per NFPA 1021 Chapter 4 Fire Officer I, Section 4.1* General:  For qualification at Fire Officer Level I, the candidate shall meet the requirements of Fire Fighter II as defined in NFPA 1001, Fire Instructor I as defined in NFPA 1041 and the job performance requirements defined in Sections 4.2 through 4.7 of this standard, and Fire Instructor I as defined in NFPA 1041 2012 or 2019 edition.

Essentially, we have the following options:

1. If you are a Firefighter II and have IFSAC or Pro Board Fire Instructor I certification you meet the prerequisite requirements for enrollment and will be eligible for IFSAC Fire Officer I certification upon successful completion of the course, which includes passing the practical skills and written exams. If all requirements are met, you will also receive an OFA course completion diploma as well as a certificate issued by the National Fire Academy (NFA).

2. If you are a Firefighter II and have State of Ohio Fire, EMS, or Fire Safety Inspector Instructor certification only (not IFSAC or Pro Board) you will be enrolled in the course. However, you will be required to you take and pass the Instructor I course completion exam in addition to the Fire Officer I course completion exam

3.   You may enroll in and complete the Academy's Fire and Emergency Services Instructor I, NFPA 1041, 2019 edition online course prior to the start of this Fire Officer I course.

Students must have access to a computer and reliable internet access for this class.

This is an intensive competency-based program  that includes pre-on campus and evening assignments. Evaluations of student performance will be conducted throughout the course, including skills testing and a comprehensive course final covering all Fire Officer I objectives as well as Fire Instructor I objectives for those individuals that do not possess ProBoard or IFSAC Fire Instructor I certification.
