Full Description
DISTRACTING DIAGNOSIS: A SAFETY EDUCATORS GUIDE TO THE AUTISM SPECTRUM

Working with an individual on the Autism Spectrum will most likely occur at some point during your career.  Are you prepared?  This session is geared towards helping fire service professionals increase their knowledge about  the Autism Spectrum in alignment with the education and communication with this population.   Tips for the provider to potentially identify an individual on the spectrum with interventions discussed to mitigate challenges that may arise during education sessions.  If the provider is uneducated about the Autism Spectrum, it may possibly present as distracting diagnosis which could ultimately result in poor approaches to communication.

Presenter: Amanda Via, MSIHCM, BSN, RN, NRP, CEN
Ms. Via was recently appointed by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine to serve on the Ohio Developmental Disabilities Council for a term beginning January 1, 2021.

The Ohio Developmental Disabilities Council is made up of over 30 members, with the majority being individuals with developmental disabilities, and parents and guardians of people with developmental disabilities who are appointed by the Governor of Ohio. By the direction of its members, the Ohio DD Council funds grant projects that aim to enrich the lives of people with developmental disabilities with an emphasis on self-determination, diversity and inclusion.

Via currently serves locally on board for the Miami County Board of Developmental Disabilities (Riverside) and with this new position, will also represent the community and families of people with disabilities at the state level.

The Ohio Public Educator Network is an informal monthly discussion group recently formed and facilitated by members of the SFM/Fire Prevention Bureau. On the 2nd Tuesday of each month we hold an open forum of discussion for persons serving as safety educators (whatever capacity) for their FD.

The 4th Tuesday of the month is slated for an offering from the SFM or invited parties to present best-practices, updates, tips, and current topics pertinent to fire and life safety education. For the graduates of the Fire and Life Safety Educator classes, these can serve as enhancements to that training, as well as refreshers on topics discussed in the formal class.
