Full Description
This is the only Fire Officer III/IV program in Ohio which allows students to receive National Fire Academy and IFSAC certification. The course meets and exceeds NFPA 1021, Standards
of Professional Qualifications for Fire Officer III/IV and covers the principles of management theory and its application to the fire service including topics on communications, professional development, community and intergovernmental relations, human resources, legal issues, strategic planning, public education, budget and financial issues and emergency management.
This course is part of the ‘Flipped Classroom’ model, which requires reading and studying new material outside of class time. This course is presented on-line and requires reading and studying new material in an environment of your choice. Evaluations of student performance will be conducted throughout the course, as well as with a final exam.

Prospective students must have, or have had, primary responsibilities as a shift commander or above in their department to be eligible to apply for this course.

Per NFPA 1021 Chapter 6 Fire Officer III: 6.1 General. For qualification at Fire Officer Level III, the
Fire Officer II shall meet the job performance requirements defined in Sections 6.2 through 6.8 of this standard. A.6.1.1 Other prerequisite knowledge can include an understanding of workers’ compensation, civil service system, role of courts (civil suits, criminal proceedings, appeals, review of administrative decisions); criminal liability for offenses such as manslaughter and negligent homicide; EEO laws and civil rights; open records and open meetings laws; and conflicts of interests and ethics.

Per NFPA 1021 Chapter 7 Fire Officer IV: 7.1* General. For qualification at Fire Officer Level IV, the
Fire Officer III shall meet the job performance requirements defined in Sections 7.2 through 7.7 of this standard. A.7.1 Other prerequisite knowledge can include an understanding of Fair Labor Standards, collective bargaining, and employment discrimination, including the 80% rule, BFOQ,
limitations on physical abilities testing, and issues associated with age, gender, ADA, race, and religion.

Documentation demonstrating ProBoard or IFSAC certification in Fire Officer I; or successful completion of NFPA 1021, 2013 edition, Chapter 4: Competencies for Fire Officer I.

HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS FOR TEAMS ON A WINDOWS PC
Computer and processor: Minimum 1.6 GHz (or higher) (32-bit or 64-bit). Memory 2.0 GB RAM, Hard disk 3.0 GB of available disk space, Graphics hardware Minimum of 128 MB graphics memory.
Devices: Standard laptop camera, microphone, and headphones/ear buds.
For a better experience with online meetings, we recommend using a computer that has a dual-core processor and 8.0 GB RAM (or higher).
The optional Background video effects are not supported on processors without an AVX2 instruction set running on Windows 8.1 or below.

HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS FOR TEAMS ON MOBILE DEVICES
Android: Compatible with Android phones and tablets. Support is limited to the last four major versions of Android. When a new major version of Android is released, the new version and the previous three versions are officially supported.
iOS: Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Support is limited to the two most recent major versions of iOS. When a new major version of iOS is released, the new version of iOS and the previous version are officially supported. The optional Blur my background video effect on iOS requires an operating system of iOS 12 or later and is compatible with the following devices: iPhone 7 or later, iPad 2018 (6th generation) or later, and the iPod touch 2019 (7th generation).

Signup Details
Students must have access to a computer and reliable internet access for this class. This is an intensive competency-based program that includes pre-course and evening assignments. Evaluations of student performance will be conducted throughout the course, including skills testing and a comprehensive course final covering all Fire Officer III & IV objectives. Students are required to purchase Chief Officer Principles and Practice, Second Edition, with Navigate 2 Advantage Access, published by Jones and Bartlett (ISBN: 9781284038422). Students should have the textbook in hand as soon as practical in order to access the pre-course assignments online. Contact the course coordinator at the Academy if you are having any difficulty accessing the course in Navigate. The $50 course fee is a result of a grant from the NFA. No show students will be invoiced the full cost of the course at $350.
